Michael McKinnon, a native of Laurel, Mississippi, began his career in the engineering and construction industry in 2000. He began by working for a local engineering firm, Chas. N. Clark Associates, involving himself in all facets of design and construction. While working, he received a Bachelor of Architectural Engineering from the University of Southern Mississippi and eventually continued his education at Mississippi State University. After receiving his Architectural degree, Michael worked for the engineering firm, leading the design and construction of numerous commercial and industrial projects.

Michael eventually established his own architectural firm, Michael McKinnon Architecture, in 2020. His success in both commercial and industrial Architecture can be attributed to the intimate knowledge he has of both fields. Michael’s dedication to self-determination that drives him to stay current with the industry’s latest technologies and trends. 

Michael McKinnon Architect (MMA) is a Laurel Mississippi-based firm with industrial, institutional, cultural, commercial and residential projects built nationally. MMA is a collaborative design practice that explores new prospects for the built environment through their integration of architectural, urban, and landscape. Using focused, inventive, and strategic thinking, MMA has been able to diversify their client base and project typology. MMA is able to rely on years of experience in the construction industry and their appreciation for community engagement.

By combining strategic form with building performance and environmental considerations, they create work that endures the stresses of time, adding value to their projects and the communities (or individuals) they serve. Their work focuses on the surrounding urban fabric and landscape – allowing urban context, architecture, and landscape to be experienced in new, unexpected ways.

Bridging practice and community, Michael serves on various local boards and committees. When not focusing on the practice, MMA focuses his time on the local downtown, both serving on the Main Street Board of Directors and leading design efforts on the direction of the district.

MMA is NCARB certified and currently licensed in the following states: Mississippi, Alabama, Florida, Texas, Louisiana.
